About James
I am a composer working mainly on music for the theatre and installations. Currently, I am based in London after graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. I have taught composition, music theory and drums for 4 years, offering tuition up to Grade 8 ABRSM level as well as guiding students through compositional techniques to help them attain their personal musical goals. As a composer my credits include work at the National Theatre, Barbican, Royal Scottish Conservatoire, Edinburgh Fringe and more. Hey, I'm James, I offer students a friendly and relaxed teaching experience tailored specifically to their musical goals, covering anything from more conventional classical compositional theory such as the ABRSM grade theory 1-8, counterpoint, harmony, orchestration and arranging, to more contemporary skills like song writing, Logic Pro X and Ableton, and writing for film and video games. Once we have had an initial consultation lesson in which we will discuss your specific goals, I will create a unique course with exercises, both academic and practical, that we can work through together in our lessons. Ultimately, I believe the joy of music should stay at the centre of all musical education and in my lessons I will always aim to maintain your love of your music whilst providing you with the knowledge to progress your musicianship.

I'm an experienced musician, and I came to James for help with harmony and orchestration. He was very attentive to what my needs were, and prepared many helpful demonstrations and exercises that have remained useful to me beyond our lessons together. I would confidently recommend him to anyone looking to develop their knowledge of music composition, harmony, and orchestration.
I worked with James last year to brush up on my Logic Pro skills. Really enjoyable, we had some great lessons and I learned a lot.
lessons with James are fun and engaging. He’s a very patient and encouraging teacher- highly recommend!
James' lessons in music theory got me through my grade 5 theory exam that I was dreading. He made it fun and accessible and we always worked at a pace that suited me!
James is an understanding and enthusiastic tutor who allowed me to learn at my own pace. Really pleased with my progression !!
