About Penelope

Ingrid Wissink is an experienced violinist who combines notions from her professional performing experiences with training in music therapy in order to help learners access music at their own speed. Ingrid studied at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec and McGill University, and went on to perform with several orchestras, eventually recording an album with the Orchestre de la Francophonie on renowned label Analekta. Her musicianship spans a wide variety of genres, and she has played major festivals and tours with bands including Monogrenade, Klô Pelgag, Antoine Corriveau, Deltron 3030/Kid Koala, and Besnard Lakes, amongst others. She has also appeared onstage at festivals including SXSW, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, NXNE, and Canadian Music Week. In 2018, she completed a Master’s in Music Therapy, with a specialty in working with the neurodiverse, especially autism.

About the lesson

My music therapy certification, as well my experiences as a musician and music teacher, and music therapist gave me the ability to adapt my teaching or communication style to the student, whether they are neurotypical or diverse, able-bodied or disabled. I specialize in spotting the strengths in individual students in order to capitalize on their abilities and keep their confidence up in order to ensure their self-confidence when it's time to improve on weaker areas.

I believe in tailoring the lesson to the student, not the other way around. I focus on student interest, engagement and growth over rigid classical tradition and pedagogy. With the amount of available distractions competing for kids' attention nowadays, it's crucial to ensure the retention of their interest for real progress to occur.
