About Jim
Hello, I am an experienced communicator and educator and for more than three years was editor of Hawaii Magazine, a bimonthly specializing in culture, history, nature and the environment.
I have taught journalism at the University of Hawaii, Manoa, and Kapiolani Community College, and any number of subjects, including English, math, science and history, as a substitute at Punahou. In 2018, I spent a year in California and Oregon, and taught as a substitute in the Mount Diablo Unified School District (East Bay San Francisco.) For this, I had to get C-BEST certification and a criminal background check. On one Friday, I taught science to unruly 7th-graders, and during final period must have confiscated a dozen paper airplanes. The good news is, they were all aerodynamically sound, so there is hope for our youth. I am currently tutoring two high-school students (one via Zoom) in trigonometry and algebra, but am comfortable with students of all ages and backgrounds.

With literature, of course, I emphasize universal themes. With writing, I prefer narration over exposition, action verbs over passive, well-organized outlines, increasingly cogent drafts, and, when possible, the use of literary devices: simile, metaphor, alliteration, assonance, internal rhyme, personification and onomatopoeia.
