Hi, I’m Rusty. I am a native bilingual speaker of both Japanese and English, born and raised in Japan before moving to the UK seven years ago. Growing up with a mixed British and Japanese heritage has given me a deep, lived understanding of both cultures. I know exactly what it takes to bridge the gap between East and West, and I bring that authentic cultural perspective into every lesson.
My Professional Background
When you book a lesson with me, you are working with someone who values punctuality, clear communication, and structured learning. I recently completed a 14-month corporate placement at IBM, where I operated in high-stakes, professional environments. During my time there, I actively utilised my bilingual skills to deliver technical software demonstrations directly to Japanese corporate clients. This experience taught me how to communicate complex ideas clearly and professionally—skills that translate perfectly into helping you understand the mechanics of the Japanese language.
My Passion for Solo-Travelling
Beyond my professional life, I am an avid solo traveller. Whether it is meticulously planning itineraries or navigating international destinations like my recent solo trip to Sanya.
Travelling independently is a massive part of who I am.
Solo-travelling requires resilience, adaptability, and an open mind. It constantly pushes you out of your comfort zone and forces you to connect with people across language barriers. I believe learning a new language is the exact same journey. Because I know what it feels like to navigate unfamiliar territory, I am highly empathetic to the challenges my students face. I foster a patient, encouraging environment where it is completely okay to make mistakes, as that is the best way to learn.

About Me & My Experience
Hi, I’m Rusty! I am a native bilingual speaker of both Japanese and English. Because I was born and raised in Japan and moved to the UK a few years ago, I have a deep, authentic understanding of both cultures. This unique perspective allows me to easily explain complex Japanese concepts, grammar, and cultural nuances to English speakers in a way that makes sense.
Alongside my native fluency, I bring a strong level of professional trust and reliability to my tutoring. I recently completed a 14-month corporate placement at IBM, where I actively utilised my bilingual advantage to deliver software demonstrations to Japanese clients. This experience means I am highly professional, organised, and fully equipped to teach formal business Japanese alongside casual conversation.
Who The Lessons Are For
My online classes are open to students of all ages and proficiency levels.
Beginners: We can start from scratch with basic greetings, survival phrases for travel, and learning the alphabets (Hiragana and Katakana).
Intermediate: We can focus on expanding your vocabulary, improving your conversational flow, and tackling complex grammar or Kanji.
Advanced/Professionals: If you are looking to master formal business Japanese (Keigo) or prepare for professional environments, my corporate background makes me the perfect fit to help you succeed.
My Teaching Methodology
I don’t believe in a rigid, one-size-fits-all approach. My teaching method is entirely student-centric and tailored to your specific goals. Before we begin, we will discuss what you want to achieve and whether that's chatting with friends, watching anime without subtitles, preparing for a trip, or communicating in a Japanese workplace.
I focus heavily on practical, real-world application rather than just textbook memorisation. I integrate cultural context into our lessons so you aren't just learning the language, but also learning how and when to use it naturally. We will build your confidence in a relaxed, patient, and encouraging online environment.
Lesson Format
Length: Lessons are typically 60 minutes long, which provides the perfect balance of review, new material, and conversational practice. (Shorter or longer sessions can be arranged based on your focus).
Location: 100% Online. You can learn comfortably from anywhere! or in-person in Reading area.
