About Yunyan GU

Hello, everyone, I am a native Chinese language speaker. I graduated from a Teaching University with a four years Teaching and Education Degree, Majoring in Chinese Language and Culture. Since then, I had been a language teacher at a Primary school and a High school for some years with excellent teaching experiences. I had also been a Project Editor in a publishing house, and I had also tutored University students at the City University of Hong Kong. After immigrating to Australia, I gained a four-year University Degree in Psychology and worked In Australian Chinese Radio as a Radio Presenter and Journalist. A few years ago, I gained a two-year Master's Degree in Chinese Studies (Both traditional and Modern) in South Germany.

From my life and learning experiences, which I had lived in lots of countries (including Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Australia, Germany, and England), and my intensive travels, I have deeply realized that learning a new language and culture shall not only for knowing this culture but also for gaining new perspectives and valuable knowledge for our self-developments, after all, a long-lasting culture reflect the wisdom of people in that culture, as people, human natures are connected. Therefore, through learning about different cultures, we learn ourselves, we feel ourselves, and eventually strengthen and love ourselves.

Not only do I understand Eastern philosophies, but also I have comprehensive knowledge about Western histories and philosophies. I will assist you to better understand the Chinese language and authentic culture through the comparisons between the Western and Eastern, traditional and modern, which is assistance may not very common to be provided by other Chinese teachers.

I am a kind, honest, open-minded, humorous, empathetic, polite and focused, and a very responsible person.

About the lesson

I can teach you authentic Mandarin language and Chinese culture relating to philosophies (classic and modern), traditional and modern art, histories, religious, folk cultures, politics, music, food, as many, from a broader perspective.

My teaching methods are various and flexible, non-conventional, interesting, and might be a bit challenging, a challenge for your brainstorming and critical thinking. I will assist you according to your learning style and personality style, as I had an excellent understanding of how cultural and personality differences can influence learning abilities, which I had gained professional knowledge from my 4 years of Psychology training in Australia.

Thanks to my intensive Master's Degree Trainings in Chinese Studies in Germany, I had opportunities to investigate my native culture outside of the box, and my understanding of my native culture significantly strengthened and deepened. My teaching will give you a new perspective that may be different from conventional Chinese teaching, but assuring for inspiration, better understanding, and deeper comprehension of the Chinese language and culture emphasizing humanities, civilizations, inspiration, and gratitude.

I would recommend that learning a new language and culture is not only learning the vocabulary, and it can become a pain if you only try to memorize a word through your cognitive abilities, but more importantly, feel it, enjoy it, immerse yourself into it. To be able to become this ACTIVE type of learner, you will need motivations, encouragement, and guidance, then, the quality and suitability of who will assist you for your learning journey become vital. By all means, I can do this excellently.
