About Megan

Hi, I’m Megan! I’m currently studying French and History at the University of Sheffield and am working towards a career in teaching. I’m a friendly, approachable and patient person who really enjoys meeting new people and helping others build their confidence.

During my Year Abroad in France, I worked as an English Language Assistant at Sacré Cœur Collège in Thonon. I taught English to secondary school pupils, planning and delivering my own lessons and activities for classes of around 20 students. I worked with pupils of different abilities and helped them develop their speaking, listening, vocabulary and pronunciation skills. Before beginning my placement, I also completed specialist training with Language Connexion, which taught me how to create engaging and effective English language activities. This experience gave me a genuine insight into teaching and confirmed that it is the career I want to pursue.

Living and working in France also gave me the opportunity to become highly confident communicating in another language and taught me how rewarding language learning can be. I understand that learning a language can sometimes feel intimidating, particularly when speaking, so I aim to make my lessons relaxed and encouraging.

Outside of university, I have worked in hospitality and customer service, which has helped me become confident communicating with people from a wide range of backgrounds. I am organised, adaptable and always happy to tailor my approach to the individual learner.

About the lesson

During my Year Abroad in France, I worked as an English Language Assistant in a secondary school, where I planned and delivered lessons and activities for classes of around 20 pupils. Before starting my placement, I completed specialist training with Language Connexion, where I learnt how to create engaging and meaningful language-learning activities. This gave me practical experience adapting lessons to different abilities and helping students develop their confidence in English.

My teaching approach is interactive and tailored to each student. I like to use a variety of activities within a lesson, including conversation practice, vocabulary exercises, gap fills, pronunciation activities and games. I can focus lessons around the skills you most want to improve, whether that is speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary or pronunciation. I particularly enjoy helping students become more confident using English in real-life situations.

I have the most experience with the 11-16 age group, but can teach English to all ages, and I am happy to adapt lessons to different levels, from complete beginners to more advanced speakers. I can also help students preparing for school exams or those who simply want to improve their conversational English.

My lessons usually last an hour, although length can be adapted to suit the learner. My aim is to create a relaxed and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and developing their English at their own pace.

My preferred lesson format is online, as this gives me flexibility and saves me a lot of time! However, if you're based in or around Sheffield, I'd be happy to discuss prices for in-person sessions.
