About Olivia

I am a native English speaker, and I have taught reading, writing, and English for 3 years in diverse, urban schools. I enjoy helping students discover a love for reading and gain confidence in their ability to learn! My lessons are grounded in a science of reading approach, which means that students will:

-Read meaningful books, poems, and plays aloud together
-Understand important background information for the text, such as the historical context, technical vocabulary, and author's information
-Analyze and discuss literary devices and see how they work together to create a meaningful text.
-Reflect on texts through written responses and projects

While I take a step back from teaching in a school setting to be present to my family, I would be honored to tutor you remotely and help you achieve your learning goals!

About the lesson

My sessions are student-centered, so our first session will consist of identifying your strengths, areas for growth, and learning goals. Together, we can achieve your goals in the following areas:

Writing: Learn how to plan, draft, edit, and proofread narrative, persuasive, and informational written works.

Reading: Develop an appreciation of and confidence for reading! We will read meaningful narratives, articles, poems, and plays aloud, as well as discuss the literary elements involved.

English/Grammar: Learn how the elements of the English language fit together so that you can improve your reading, writing, and speaking abilities!

Homework Assistance: If you are feeling "stuck" on a particular assignment, I am happy to offer targeted assistance in addition to building your ability to complete similar assignments independently.

Each session will end with a brief check-in regarding your progress, what you enjoyed about our session, and what could be improved for future sessions.
