About Monique

I'm a native French speaker and have lived in Ireland for over thirty years. I've spent most of my working life teaching my language — more than twenty years with the Alliance Française, and over ten giving grinds to students preparing for the Leaving and Junior Certificate.

I'm patient with students who are nervous about speaking, as most are at the start. I correct carefully rather than constantly: a student afraid of making mistakes stops talking, and a student who stops talking doesn't improve. Lessons are relaxed, but we work.

About the lesson

I'm a native French speaker with over 20 years' teaching experience at the Alliance Française and more than 10 years giving grinds to Leaving Certificate and Junior Cycle students. I also teach adult learners at every level. All lessons are online, so students anywhere in Ireland are welcome.

My focus is on the three things that decide how a student performs on the day: pronunciation, fluency and confidence.
Most students arrive knowing far more French than they can actually use. They hesitate, translate in their heads, and lose marks not through lack of knowledge but through lack of practice speaking aloud. Regular conversation with a native speaker fixes that faster than anything else — and online suits this particularly well, because the whole lesson is spent talking.
Pronunciation — accent, liaison, rhythm, and the vowel sounds that don't exist in English. Corrected properly and early, before habits set.
Fluency — speaking without pausing to translate. Built through repeated, unhurried conversation rather than memorized scripts, which examiners recognize instantly.
Confidence — the oral is as much nerves as knowledge. By the time we've worked through the material dozens of times, walking into the exam feels like just another lesson.
Full oral preparation for Leaving Cert: the entretien personnel, the discussion générale, and the optional document if a student chooses to bring one. Grammar and written work covered alongside, so the whole course improves rather than one paper.

Adults: complete beginners/beginners returning to French years after school, and confident speakers who've plateaued are all welcome. Lessons are built around what you need the language for — travel, conversation, work, or simply one hour a week speaking French with someone who will correct you properly.

How lessons run: video call, with corrections, notes and vocabulary shared on screen and sent afterwards so there's something to revise from. No travel, easy to fit around school or work, and simple to add extra sessions in the run-up to the oral examination.

I work with Junior Cycle students building a foundation, Leaving Cert students at Ordinary or Higher Level at any stage from fifth year onwards, and adults at any level. Lessons run in French wherever the student's level allows, with explanations in English whenever something needs unpicking.
