About Ray

Hi, I’m Ray, a native Mandarin speaker from Taiyuan, a historic city in northern China. I now live in Athlone, where I recently completed an MSc in AI Software Design at the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS).

Before moving to Ireland, I spent 10 years working as a software engineer in China, collaborating with teams every day and explaining complex ideas in a clear, simple way. That experience shapes how I teach: patient, well organised and focused on what you actually need.

I love sharing my language and culture. Chinese can look intimidating at first, but with the right guidance it becomes logical, fun and deeply rewarding. Living in Ireland, I also understand the specific challenges English speakers face, from the tones to the characters, and I know how to make them easier.

Whether you are a complete beginner or want to improve your speaking, I will help you build real confidence in Chinese. I look forward to meeting you!

About the lesson

My Mandarin lessons are relaxed, practical and focused on real communication. From the very first lesson, you will start speaking. I build a strong foundation in pinyin and the four tones, then introduce everyday vocabulary, useful sentence patterns and Chinese characters step by step, always with plenty of speaking practice.

Every lesson is tailored to your goals, whether you want to travel to China, connect with Chinese friends or family, prepare for the HSK exam, or use Chinese at work. I also share insights into Chinese culture, daily life and customs, so you understand not just the language but the people who speak it.

Lessons usually last 60 minutes and can take place online or in person in Athlone.

I am a native Mandarin speaker from China and have lived in Ireland for several years, so I understand the challenges English speakers face when learning Chinese and can explain things clearly in English. With a professional background in IT, I can also help learners who need Chinese for business or technology.

Lessons are suitable for complete beginners to intermediate learners, including university students, professionals and adults learning for fun.
