About Candela

My name is Candela and I'm from Seville, Spain. I have been living in Edinburgh for the last four and a half years.
I am a dynamic and extroverted person who loves listening and connecting with people as well as sharing what I know and helping anyone who needs it.
When I first arrived to the UK, I started teaching Spanish to some friends informally, and soon after started doing it professionally , I recently got my ELE- (Español como lengua extranjera) teaching certificate, accredited by Cervantes International University.
What I like the most about tutoring is being able to show everyone how fun and easy can be to learn a second language.
I would love to connect with you and help you in your learning process!

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

    1) Spanish is my native language, although the language learning process has always seemed highly interesting to me. As a kid, I had to learn English in school, which I found boring due to the approach the public education system had towards language learning. My father found me a really good private teacher who taught me how fun it can be to learn a second language. He found my matters of interest and planned the lessons based on them, included music that I liked and games, that made the learning process extremely pleasurable, he motivated me to become a teacher myself.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

    2) If we're looking for a fictional character who can represent the Spanish language and culture, Don Quijote himself is an enduring symbol of Spanish literature and ideals, representing themes of idealism, resilience, and the complexities of human nature. The satiric side of Don Quijote is one of its most brilliant and enduring features. Through humor and irony, the novel critiques not only the excesses of romantic idealism but also the contradictions of contemporary Spanish society, blending profound insight with sharp wit. This satirical approach has made the story timeless and relevant across generations.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

    3) The hardest part of learning Spanish is tackling verb conjugations and grammar rules, plus the variety of accents and slang. To make it easier for my students, I like to practice speaking and send them notes and explanations after every class, show them Spanish music or shows, and use fun tools like apps or games. Little by little, it all clicks!
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

    4) One of my most memorable moments as a Spanish teacher was helping a student pronounce the vowels correctly, especially the "e" and "i," which they kept mixing up. We turned it into a fun exercise using exaggerated sounds and silly phrases like "el elefante elegante" and "el inglés ingenioso." One day, during a class, they confidently read a short story without mixing them up, and their excitement was priceless. It was a great reminder that with a little creativity and patience, even the trickiest challenges can become fun milestones!
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

    5) Spanish is my mother tonge, and it´s reflected on my personality as well as it is a reflection of the Spanish culture itself.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

    6) When I first learned the word "bark," I only knew it as the sound a dog makes. So, when I excitedly told someone I heard a "big bark" in the park, they asked, "Dog or tree?" I quickly realized English words often have more than one meaning, and context is key!
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

    7) Traveling to an English-speaking country boosted my language skills by immersing me in real-life situations. Asking for directions, ordering food, and chatting with locals helped me practice speaking confidently and pick up new vocabulary. It taught me that language is best learned through real-world conversations and experiences.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

    8) I make learning Spanish fun through gamification, turning lessons into interactive challenges. By encouraging students to learn through play, I keep them engaged and motivated.
