About Ian

I have undergraduate degrees in Fine Arts and Liberal Arts (Anthropology, Art, Philosophy). I have studied in English, Spanish, and French contexts in degrees philosophy and cognitive science in graduate school, just now finalizing my PhD in program in the French-speaking region of Switzerland. I have lived on and off in Chile where my family is from but was mostly raised in Miami. In Chile I have tutored many students, primarily English but sometimes French, over many years, as well as Spanish mostly to English speaking students in the United States. I offer lessons online.

About the lesson

I feel that getting the student to speak more than myself is best for practice. I interview the student and instant message any corrections to them in real-time. I also frequently assign news articles to advanced students and correct their written summaries of these. I strike a balance between allowing the student to direct the focus of vocabulary to suit their needs while at the same time introducing necessary grammatical challenges such as prompting "Quiero que.../ Je veux que..." sentences to produce the subjunctive tense or stories from their past to practice various past tenses (imperfect, perfect, pluperfect, etc). I focus on conversation and vocabulary building but am also able to offer lessons in more technical writing for academic or business contexts.
