About Amy
Hello! I am a professional violinist and teacher based in West Hampstead, London. It is my pleasure to provide my students with engaging, inspiring and thoughtfully structured lessons, using trusted methods I have developed through years of study and collaboration with world-class musicians, teachers and pedagogical experts.
Some details about myself and my musical background:
Growing up in the Orkney Isles, my first exposure to music was centered around enjoyment, community and group playing, primarily through folk music. I quickly transitioned to classical music, however, and was subsequently awarded places in the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, the National Children’s Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
At the age of 16, I was awarded a full scholarship to study at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, where I went on to graduate with First Class Honours in Music Performance. During my time in Wales, I studied under Martin Gwilym-Jones of BBC National Orchestra of Wales. I continued my studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, completing my Master’s degree under the guidance of soloist Bartosz Woroch.
Since completing my Master’s degree, I have enjoyed a full and varied freelance career, performing as a soloist, orchestral and chamber musician on European and international stages. Teaching violin is something I have maintained throughout my studies and into my professional career, and I now have over nine years of experience in violin tuition, both privately and through junior music academies and schools.
My students range from complete beginners to advanced players, from the age of five through to adults. I consider my approach to be one of inclusion, patience and, above all, musical enjoyment.

I am a patient and friendly tutor, always looking for ways to make each lesson both informative and enjoyable, while nurturing a positive and rewarding relationship between the student and their instrument. Everyone learns in different ways and at different rates, and each student may have different goals when it comes to playing the violin. I therefore adapt the structure and content of each lesson to suit the individual, taking into account their goals, learning style and commitments. I incorporate Alexander Technique principles to guide my students in building a technique that is sustainable and pain-free, ensuring healthy posture habits and ease of movement while playing. If necessary I am also happy to give an outline of what a productive practice session may include, and give advice on how to structure your sessions at home between lessons.
Lessons take place at my home in West Hampstead, London, and can range from 30 to 90 minutes depending on the student’s age, level and preferences. Students are expected to bring their own instrument to lessons and I am happy to provide guidance if you are looking to purchase or rent a violin before you begin. I will also give recommendations for any music books and accessories such as shoulder rests and strings.
Previous students have successfully undertaken ABRSM examinations, and I am happy to incorporate exam preparation into lessons for those who are interested. Whether your goal is to work towards an exam, develop your technique, prepare for an audition, or simply enjoy learning and playing the violin, lessons can be tailored to suit you.

Perfect! Amy is such a nice and talented violin tutor. We really appreciate that she can design a learning plan which best suits the student. My daughter gave a try learning violion a couple of years ago but gave up because she found herself not so interested. But this time she clearly has the interest and is getting very nice progress. 5 stars tutor.
- I have enjoyed teaching Emily the violin! She is a very curious and receptive learner and so is a pleasure to teach. Good progress so far and I look forward to continuing her development on the instrument.Amy's response :
Perfect! Amy is disciplined, methodical, professional, punctual, and hardworking. She takes pride in her work and aspires to be the best at it. My lessons with her were structured to first fix the foundational issues of my playing before attempting more complex work. Amy also has unmatched hearing ability. I was often impressed by how quickly she could pick up even the slightest intonation mistakes and guide me in correcting them.
On occasions when I wasn’t as attentive, she remained patient, reiterating concepts until I fully understood them. If you take learning the violin seriously, look no further than Amy. Show up consistently, be professional, pay attention, practice, work hard and she will do her best by you.- Great student and very receptive learner! Pleasure to teach.Amy's response :

As far as violin tutors go, Amy is the best you can get. Highly knowledgeable and experienced, yet also kind and patient, Amy has been extremely helpful in boosting my confidence and skill at playing the violin - I couldn’t have asked for a better tutor.
’d recommend her to anyone, especially those seeking to improve their violin playing in a supportive and encouraging environment.Brilliant tutor. Amy has been teaching me violin for a year and has been immensely kind and patient. Impressive level of knowledge. Would definitely recommend!
After a few years break from the violin I thought I’d never get myself back to the stage I used to perform at as I’d forgotten so much, but with Amy’s guidance, motivating approach and inspiring levels of talent and knowledge I found myself playing at a standard I didn’t believe I’d ever get to. I used to think of practice as a chore but it’s now a major highlight in my day! Amy is by far the best teacher I’ve ever had and I would recommend her to anyone looking for a tutor.
Amy is an excellent tutor, very patient and kind! I love going to lessons with her, she makes them fun and I can see the improvement in my playing after just a short time. 5 stars :-)
Not only is Amy a fantastic violinist, but she is also a lovely and kind person. She is immensely talented, and an all round pleasure to work with. Highly recommend!!
Amy tutored my daughter for a year. B had been learning for a year and Amy was so lovely about assessing where she was at and what B needed to make progress. Amy was always so encouraging, gave sensible goals for my then 11y old daughter to work on during the week and set a good mix of music/tunes and technique and scales for B to work on. Amy was also always willing to play things again and again for B to grasp a new tune... this was huge as B mainly plays by ear. Amy is really missed since she moved south. B would love to be able to continue being tutored by Amy, if only it were practical. I am more than happy to be able to give this recommendation as Amy made a big impact on my daughter at a time when B was finding dealing with new people difficult. B took to Amy straight away due to her gentle (but no nonsense!!), open, honest and friendly approach.
