About Hannah
Hannah Wood is an English professor and writing tutor who currently resides in Harlem, NYC. She has an MFA in playwriting from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University where she double-majored in history and minored in anthropology. She went back to NYU for an MA in European and Mediterranean Studies. Her thesis was about the history of nationalism in national theatre, with a focus on Dublin’s Abbey Theatre. She is also certified to teach TESOL/TEFL, and has proofread college essays and PhD dissertations for students who speak English as a second language. Currently, she is an English professor and TESOL instructor. On her days off you might find her reading, running, walking her dog, watching SF Giants or 49ers games, and most definitely drinking hot chocolate (not necessarily at the same time).

I have been teaching since 2016, and in that span, I have become attuned to the challenges that students face when tackling an essay—from a lack of organization and clarity, or difficulties with grammar, to trouble concentrating, and even exhaustion from the rigors of a job or family obligations. Many of my students are first-generation Americans or immigrants who struggle with writing in what is their second or even third language. Though I have held a certification in TESOL/TEFL since 2010, which gave me basic techniques for working with English language learners, my hands-on work as a tutor, TESOL instructor, and English professor has proved even more invaluable in allowing me to develop a unique understanding of how to tailor my feedback, suggestions, and lessons to a diverse population with varying instructional needs. In fact, I am an intuitive, helpful, and efficient structural and grammatical troubleshooter. I can quickly diagnose confusion over the requirements of an assignment, the subject of an article, or the core of a concept, and clearly teach grammar, sentence structure, argument, literary analysis, and citation. My education and teaching experience have led me to become an engaging, resourceful, curious, and empathetic tutor and professor. I would be thrilled to share my background and knowledge with new students and look forward to learning much from them, as well.
