About Alasdair

After graduating from the Royal Northern College of Music, I studied for my Masters at the prestigious Royal College of Music, London and graduated in July 2013 with a Distinction. Since graduating from the RCM, I have enjoyed a career filled with variety. I have had trials for the position of Second Oboe with the Hong Kong Philharmonic and Second Oboe with the BBC Philharmonic alongside freelancing with many orchestras in the UK. These include the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Royal Northern Sinfonia, The Royal Ballet Sinfonia, RTE Concert Orchestra, Ensemble Cyrmu and Brandenburg Sinfonia. Alongside my orchestral work, I am regularly employed for recording sessions ranging from library and orchestral sessions to pop tracks. In recent years, I have regularly played for musical theatre productions in London’s West End and on tour. These have included Les Miserable, Oklahoma!, The King & I, Miss Saigon, Aspects of Love and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. I am the oboe tutor at Wimbledon High School for Girls and Newland House Prep School alongside my private students. I have an up to date DBS certificate available on request.

About the lesson

My thoughts on teaching; I thoroughly believe that enjoyment is a vitally important element when learning any musical instrument. Playing an instrument is about trying to harness an extension of the human voice, something that is incredibly personal and unique to each individual student. I find the best way to facilitate this new outlet is to try and draw similarities or comparisons with their pre-existing hobbies and interests. This style of teaching keeps students engaged, particularly when they hit tricky patches or find a new technique more demanding as they can draw on experiences from other aspects of life. I really enjoy helping people develop their own unique musical voice. This means that as they progress as young musicians, they can use it to help them communicate with their peers through solo, chamber or orchestral performance.
