About Jacob
I am an experienced online tutor currently teaching A-Level Religious Studies and Philosophy alongside Sociology, Politics and other humanities subjects.
I have an academic background in Politics, Philosophy and the social sciences, including a BA in Politics with Philosophy, an MSc in International Politics and a PhD in Sociology.
My current specialist teaching includes OCR A-Level Philosophy of Religion, where I work with students on both difficult philosophical concepts and the essay-writing skills needed to evaluate them effectively.
I particularly enjoy teaching subjects where there is no simple answer. My approach is based around discussion and questioning: I encourage students to explain why an argument works, identify weaknesses, compare competing views and form their own justified conclusions.
My aim is to make complex ideas understandable without oversimplifying them.

My Religious Studies and Philosophy lessons focus on helping students understand difficult ideas clearly and then develop them into strong analytical essays.
I currently teach OCR A-Level Religious Studies and Philosophy of Religion, including Plato, the soul, mind-body debates, the problem of evil, religious experience, free will, God and time, and religious language.
Rather than asking students to memorise philosophers and scholars in isolation, I help them understand the argument first: what is being claimed, why someone might agree, how it can be challenged and how to reach a reasoned judgement.
We regularly practise essay planning, evaluation, use of scholars and building paragraphs that move logically from argument to counter-argument and conclusion.
Lessons are typically one hour and can focus on learning content, revising difficult topics, essay planning, improving written work or preparing for examinations.
