About Tom

I studied biochemistry at the University of California, Davis but took an immediate liking to organic chemistry as soon as I took it. I went to office hours to pick my professors’ brains, I went to private tutoring, and even helped my peers and got all As! When I finished organic chemistry I was super sad but realized it didn’t have to end there, so I became a tutor myself! I taught concepts and procedures in the lab, I taught course material, and even ran a review session in front of 200+ students! My office hours were consistently packed to the point where people had to stand at the doorway to take notes because...in all honesty, the material and tricks I taught to help students seemed like it was cheating. But that’s just it! Organic chemistry has such a bad rap because so many instructors simply don’t understand students’ struggle in the course. My career goal is to become an organic chemistry teacher and help people find the passion that I have come to know.

About the lesson

My teaching approach is atypical but it’s what I have found to be the most effective for organic chemistry. So many teachers stress the ideas of “let the student struggle through it, the teacher is merely a guide” or my personal favorite: “you can’t just give them the answer.” Well I don’t like that and neither do my students. Of course I will let you work through a problem by yourself, but if you’ve taken other organic chemistry courses before, you may have come to the realization that there are many situations where you have no clue of how to even start, or in some cases, how to even end (I know I have). Time is so valuable in preparation for this course. There are so many types of problems professors can ask you on an ochem test, and spending 15+ minutes on one problem in a tutoring session is simply a waste. I would much rather work on 4 or 5 problems in that time to cover the diversity of possible questions on an exam. It may seem short, but trust me, I will take no shortcuts in the explanations of how to arrive at the answer. We will work on so many questions and I want nothing but your understanding and appreciation for organic chemistry to surpass that of everyone in your class.
