They say time flies when you’re having fun, but in the world of education, time flies when you’re constantly adapting. This month marks my 15th year as an educator, and looking back at my first-year self—armed with over-ambitious colour-coded folders and a very nervous smile—I realise how much the "heart" of teaching has changed for me.

Here are the three biggest truths fifteen years in the trenches have taught me:

1. Connection Precedes Content

In 2009, I thought my job was to be a fountain of knowledge. I quickly learned that if a student doesn't feel seen or supported, the best lesson plan in the world won't land. True tutoring isn't just about transferring data; it’s about building confidence. When a student trusts you, their "I can't" slowly transforms into "Let me try."

2. There Is No "Standard" Student

After working with hundreds of unique minds, I’ve retired the phrase "one size fits all." Some learners need a visual roadmap, others need to talk through a problem out loud, and some need to see the real-world "why" before they’ll engage with the "how." Personalised instruction isn't a luxury—it’s the key to unlocking potential.

3. The "Lightbulb Moment" Never Gets Old

Whether it’s a complex algebraic formula or the perfect thesis statement, that split second when a concept finally clicks is still the best part of my job. It’s the reason I’m just as passionate today as I was a decade and a half ago.

Looking Ahead

Education looks different than it did fifteen years ago—we have better tech, new methodologies, and a deeper understanding of neurodiversity. But the core mission remains the same: helping a student realise they are capable of more than they imagined.
