About Calypso

Hello, I’m Calypso, a Latin and Greek tutor. After graduating from Oxford in 2019 I started teaching remedial Classical languages, and also some English language and literature. I have taught pupils who have gone on to study at competitive schools like Winchester College. I myself went to Charterhouse and have a comprehensive understanding of the pressurised atmosphere of independent schools.

Teaching Experience

2013 Volunteer Teaching Assistant Seven Oaks Primary School, Surrey.

Once a week, I helped a Year 3 teacher with general classroom duties: organising children into groups and setting them activities, listening to children read, helping them with art and handicrafts, and teaching them to dress themselves etc.

2019-present: Private Tutor

In 2019 I coached a local boy in GCSE English literature, focusing predominantly on his set texts (Macbeth, A Christmas Carol). I taught him how to recognise, decipher and analyse connotations of language, using my knowledge of the Classics to help him connect the texts to their Greek and Latin etymology and wider cultural themes.

I have since coached a boy in Greek and Latin, helping him prepare for entrance exams to Winchester by working through exercises and solidifying his grammar. He has since gained a place at Winchester College, with entrance exam results for both Greek and Latin placing him in the top 5th of candidates.

I currently teach several students Latin, Greek, and English, from beginners to pupils who are about to take their GCSEs as A Levels and require help with both set text revision and remedial language sessions.

About the lesson

My ethos when it comes to teaching is building confidence. I know how it feels to be a little lost or behind, and how it can knock your enthusiasm for a subject. I like to start with basic grammar, and usually the student and I work our way through the textbook, catching anything that might have been neglected by the teachers at school.
