About Oliver

I'm a second-year undergraduate in Geography at the University of Oxford from West Sussex. I've tutored professionally since I left school but have always loved teaching and helping my friends and younger students. I love tutoring because I find it incredibly rewarding to find out how a student thinks and how they apply themselves academically. I've always been amazed how much you can help someone understand and remember concepts and ideas if you help them find their own way of thinking about it.

I'm friendly, patient (I started with teaching my siblings Maths!) and fairly analytical in the way I teach. My lessons are very engaged, since I prefer guiding the student to make the right conclusion rather than giving it to them - helps them remember it if they can track the thought process. This I find makes the lessons more reassuring and satisfying for my students as they are taking part and actively figuring out the answers rather than being passively lectured on their weaknesses, which can make a student feel weaker. It is important to feel confident and pleased with your performance in a lesson for it to be successful (as I found out with my own Oxford tutorials!).

The small-group teaching style used by my tutors at Oxford has helped me hone my tutoring skills and understand how to make a student feel comfortable even when they are lacking confidence in their ability.

Ultimately, my aim is not only to improve results, but to help students become more confident and independent in the way they approach their work.

About the lesson

I achieved a First in my Oxford Geography Prelims and am experienced in helping students improve essay writing, exam technique and in building high-level geographical arguments. Last year, my GCSE students improved by an average of two grades between their mocks and their final exams.

I find that effective teaching is highly specific to the student, since no two students share identical strengths and weaknesses, and, critically, the way they understand ideas. Therefore my lessons are personalised, focused on a specific goal to make efficient and satisfying progress. I find teaching like this incredibly rewarding and that my students enjoy their subjects more than with generic textbook-led studying!

My lessons are one hour long, as this allows enough time to make meaningful progress through first establishing the specifics of the area holding them back, and working with them to find an effective solution that works for them, and finally applying solutions to exam questions for practice and feedback.

I tutor Geography at GCSE, IB and A-Level, and can also help prospective Oxbridge applicants with geography admissions and interview preparation.

I also tutor GCSE maths, having achieved an A* in Maths A-level and an A in AS Further Maths. In Maths I take a similar approach, handling a topic area at a time and helping students find their own understanding rather than drilling in forgettable technique. Often students feel less capable than they are due because they have not been taught in a way that suits how they think. I love how showing a student a different explanation or approach can completely change their confidence in the subject!
