About Francis

I have recently completed my undergraduate degree at Oxford in history with a First, and have A-levels in History, English and Economics. At school I enjoyed working my friends through problems they did not understand, and I relished running a history club to engage with history more directly than we did in lessons. I enjoyed guiding my friends to make connections between time periods and apply their interests to broader historical questions. I am widely read, from Ancient Greece and the Anglo-Saxons to the Second World War, revolutionary Russia and the economics of the industrial revolution, and my Oxford history course has taught me to deal with everything from the broad movements in Europe of the reformation and renaissance down to the narrow corpus of archaeological and place-name evidence which provides our best picture of english migration in the 5th century. I have savoured engaging with the intellectual and artistic movements of the renaissance, and enjoyed following the allusions in Shakespeare's The Tempest to the discovery of the new world, renaissance humanism, and in particular Thomas More's utopia. I am and continue to be an avid reader and in terms of teaching I specialise in the comprehension of Chaucer and Shakespeare. I learned and continue to play the flute at a high level, and along the way I helped to lead and encourage others, picking up on technique mistakes and providing encouragment for what they did well. Currently I am aiming towards a carreer either as an accademic or a teacher, and nurturing and fulfilling a love for learning as I have enjoyed has always been a delight for me.

About the lesson

I will teach students to understand concepts and write with greater clarity, focusing on gaps in understanding and rigour of argumentation, crucial in coursework and general comprehension. Lessons will also cover essay technique and how to adapt answers to fulfil marking criteria. Ambitious and able students will be pushed to the next level, asked stimulating questions and encouraged to follow their inquiries more deeply to engage with further reading and primary evidence. For English I can take you through tricky passages and teach you how to deal with the extensive markscheme requirements, and build coherent comparisons for the coursework component. In Economics, I can take students through chains of reasoning, graphs and ensure that they maintain clear analysis and focused evaluation throughout. Advice is also available on courses, university admissions and Oxbridge, personal statements, courswork, referencing and more! Lessons will last 1 hour, students will be asked to bring recent homework and essays.
