About Alexandra

Most of my experience so far has been in advising my fellow students in class throughout GCSE and A-Level (my teacher would often get me to assist under-confident students), helping students wishing to apply to Oxford with their application, aiding my younger brother (who finds English and Humanities very difficult) through his school life and through tutoring, doing after school tutoring with children up to the age of 12 and homework help with children of all ages while babysitting.

While this is not the most formal of experiences, I am very sure in my ability to improve English and Humanities ability by taking a personal, involved and tailored approach. My aim is to re-enliven these subjects for children who find them difficult or wish to excel and give those aiming for exams a better approach for the mark scheme, and a solid training before they enter this exam to allow them to perform to the best of their ability.

I personally know the impact a tutor of similar age, who remembers the trials of being a child and teenager, can have - as a first year Cambridge student tutored me through Physics GCSE and my grades improved from a C to eventual A* as they understood my problems in a way that older teachers couldn't.

I am totally committed to the progress and confidence of every student I teach, and welcome the opportunity to share a subject I adore and excel at.

About the lesson

I am a 19 year-old English Language and Literature Student at Oxford University and am passionate about reading and literature, and love sharing my knowledge with others. My teaching is about developing a student's base understanding of vocabulary, grammar, writing style and immersion into literary language in order to build confidence and allow more sophisticated arguments in both essay contexts and creative writing for 11+ exams. In a usual session I would go through a small exercise using a text sample relevant for the type of exam being set (comprehension, close analysis, commentary) and test my student's ability level. I would then set homework tasks based on areas to improve - for example if a creative writing student used a limited vocabulary I might set them a dictionary word research exercise, a spelling test and a Roald Dahl short story to read through and make notes on. I also like to regularly allow my students to do timed practice papers, and for these to be marked so that they are aware of and can see their own progress, as well as ensuring that good marks are achieved.
