  • What age did you start playing sport? Tell us about this time or moment in your life.

I started playing table tennis when I was 8 years old. Initially, my parents enrolled me in swimming lessons at Chin Woo Stadium, but the class schedule was difficult for them to manage. Since my swimming class ended earlier, they decided to register me for table tennis lessons right after that.

At first, I did not know much about the sport, and I was sometimes laughed at by other students because I did not fully understand the rules. Instead of giving up, I became motivated to improve myself and prove that I could become a good player. I also found the sport very exciting — I enjoyed the fast pace of the game and even the “pong pong” sound of the rallies made me love the atmosphere of table tennis.

One of the most unforgettable moments for me was winning my first competition as a school representative. Becoming champion at such a young age gave me a strong sense of achievement and confidence. Since then, table tennis has become an important part of my life.

Now, at 22 years old, I still actively participate in tournaments to keep improving myself and stay competitive. Through table tennis, I have learned discipline, resilience, and how to accept failure positively while always striving to perform better in every game.
  • What are your favourite sports; those that you practice at a high level, a simple hobby, and a sport that you'd still like to discover?

Without a doubt, my favourite sport is table tennis. It is the sport that I have practiced at the highest level for many years. During high school, there were occasions when I trained for as long as 13 hours in a single day, especially when preparing for competitions. Even now as a university student, I still spend many hours training whenever tournaments are approaching. What I enjoy most about table tennis is the constant process of improving myself and pushing my limits both physically and mentally.

Besides table tennis, I also enjoy many other sports, especially racquet sports such as badminton and tennis. Recently, I have become interested in pickleball because it feels like a “larger version” of table tennis, with a bigger court, paddle, and ball, while still requiring quick reflexes and strategy.

Apart from racquet sports, I also enjoy volleyball, hiking, surf skating, marathon running, and practicing at the driving range. I like trying different sports because they challenge me in different ways and help me stay active. However, one sport that I still hope to improve in is football — I always joke that I play it much worse compared to my other sports.
  • What gives you the motivation and passion to pursue your sport?

What motivates me the most in pursuing table tennis is my strong desire to improve and achieve success through competition. Since young, I always had a strong competitive spirit and wanted to challenge myself to become better. One of my biggest goals in the past was to become a Kuala Lumpur state player. Wearing the KL team jersey and representing my state in competitions was something I was very passionate about.

I also enjoy the experience of competing in tournaments because it allows me to travel, meet different players, and create memories with teammates and friends through the sport that I love. The competitive environment motivates me greatly, especially when everyone demonstrates sportsmanship and works together towards the same goal.

Beyond winning medals or titles, table tennis has also taught me discipline, resilience, and teamwork. Most importantly, I want my parents to feel proud of my achievements, not only in sports but also in my personal growth and character development.
  • Do you have a sporting achievement that you're particularly proud of?

One of the sporting achievements that I am most proud of was competing in national-level tournaments at a young age. When I was 12 years old, I participated in MSSM and won a silver medal. A year later, I also achieved a silver medal in the Chinese Independent Private School Tournament. Both competitions involved top players from different states across the country, so these achievements were very meaningful to me and gave me confidence to continue pursuing the sport seriously.

Currently, as a university representative, I am proud to have continued achieving good results in various tournaments. Some of my recent accomplishments include becoming champion in the Monash University Table Tennis Championship 2025, Trident Games 2025, Sunway Table Tennis Invitational Tournament 2025, and Kejohanan Ping Pong Terbuka Wanita Berpasukan 2026, among others.

These achievements are special to me because they reflect not only my skills, but also the years of discipline, consistency, and hard work that I have dedicated to table tennis.
  • How have your achievements and challenges made you a better sportsperson?

My achievements and challenges in table tennis have helped me grow not only as a sportsperson, but also as a person. Table tennis is a sport that requires quick thinking and fast decision-making. Before every serve or return, I need to think strategically — predicting how my opponent may respond, deciding where to attack, and reacting within seconds. This has trained me to stay focused, think ahead, and remain calm under pressure.

At the same time, balancing academics and sports has taught me the importance of time management and discipline. As a student-athlete, I have to organise my schedule carefully to ensure that both my studies and training remain balanced.

Most importantly, table tennis has taught me how to handle failure positively. In sports, winning is never guaranteed, and every loss becomes an opportunity to reflect, improve weaknesses, and grow stronger. I have learned that success takes time, consistency, and patience. Building a strong foundation through continuous learning and hard work is what truly helps an athlete improve over the long term.
  • If you had to go for a jog with a famous athlete, who would you choose? And what questions would you ask them?

If I had the opportunity to go for a jog with a famous athlete, I would choose Harimoto Miwa because she is one of the most talented young table tennis players in the world. I admire her fast playing style, strong mentality, and the discipline she shows at such a young age. What inspires me the most is that she started representing Japan internationally while still very young, which also means she had to face a lot of pressure and expectations from the public and the table tennis community.

As someone who is passionate about table tennis myself, I believe listening to her experiences and mindset would inspire me to improve further as both a player and an individual.
  • How do you help people stay motivated?

As a table tennis coach, I help people stay motivated by creating a positive and enjoyable training environment. I set realistic goals according to each student’s level so they can see their own progress step by step. I also encourage them to stay consistent and remind them that improvement takes time.

Besides teaching techniques, I share my own experiences with challenges and failures to help students understand that losing is part of learning. Most importantly, I want my students to enjoy the sport and feel confident throughout their journey.
  • What makes you a Superprof in sports?

What makes me a Superprof in sports is my combination of competitive experience, passion, and patience in coaching. As an active table tennis player who still participates in tournaments, I understand both the technical and mental aspects of the sport.

I believe that building a strong foundation is the most important part of training. I always focus on helping students master proper basic techniques and consistency before moving on to advanced or competition-level skills. I believe a strong foundation makes future training smoother and helps students improve more effectively in the long run.

I also adapt my coaching style according to each student’s level and personality. Besides improving skills, I encourage my students to build confidence, discipline, and enjoyment in the sport. My goal is not only to help them play better, but also to develop a positive mindset through sports.
