About Callum

I am a Postdoctoral Researcher in Chemistry at the University of York, holding a PhD in Chemistry (University of York, 2024) and a First-Class Master’s Degree in Chemistry (MChem, Manchester Metropolitan University, achieving an overall average above 80%).

With over 3,000 hours of private tutoring experience, I have worked with students across all academic stages:

GCSE Students: Supported both Foundation and Higher tier students in building rock-solid foundations and consistently securing Grade 4+ targets.

A-Level Students: Guided learners through advanced mechanisms and challenging physical/organic chemistry concepts to help them exceed predicted grades and enter top universities.

Undergraduate Students: Tutored 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year chemistry majors across physical, organic, and inorganic topics.

In addition to private tutoring, I am a certified Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) at the University of York, trained under high pedagogical standards within one of the UK’s premier award-winning chemistry departments (Athena Swan Gold standard). Whether you need to boost your grade by a boundary or master degree-level thermodynamics, I bring maximum effort and passion to every session.

Chemistry can often feel overwhelming when taught as abstract rules and formulas. My goal is to break down complex mechanisms and advanced concepts into intuitive, manageable steps tailored entirely to your learning style.

What I Offer:

- Tailored 1-on-1 Tutoring: Dedicated individual focus where you can ask questions freely, build confidence, and master foundational concepts without pressure.

- Small Group Sessions: Flexible group tutoring available upon request at negotiated rates for peers who prefer learning together.

- Targeted Exam Prep & Coursework: Step-by-step guidance on exam technique, past paper practice, and tricky problem sets for GCSE and A-Level success.

- University-Level Coaching & Assignment Proofreading: Advanced module support for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year undergraduate chemistry, as well as proofreading support for scientific reports and assignments at a reduced hourly rate.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in Chemistry when I was around 15 thanks to a very passionate teacher who made the topic interesting and fun to learn. I started private tutoring during the first lockdown in the UK during COVID (around March 2020) although had tutored classmates and family for free before this.

  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love to talk about all aspects of chemistry, whether it’s formal and strict following an exam specification for a specific qualification or if you just have a general interest in a certain area. I’m happy to chat about anything as it all fascinates me. If you see something interesting and want to know how it works (at least the chemistry of it) then drop me a message.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had a couple of teachers when I was 15-18 that really inspired my interest in chemistry but have had lots of role models since then going through university that I’ve been lucky to work with and have helped me grow as a chemist and a teacher.

  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think the main quality a tutor needs is patience. Not everybody’s brain works the same way as yours. Just because I find something easy doesn’t mean everyone does. I’m prepared to explain something as many different ways as it takes for someone to understand something. I often take topics all the way back to basic principles you’ll learn when you’re 12+ if needed and build people up to the level they desire.

  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

Something I’ll always remember is one of my university lecturers saying a quote from Richard Feynman (one of the founding fathers of quantum mechanics): “I think I can safely say that nobody really understands quantum mechanics”. As he developed quantum mechanics but didn’t understand it himself it made me feel a lot better about not understanding it myself.

  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I didn’t do very well in my A-Level exams which, are pre-university exams in England, for what I needed as my university offered anyways. I didn’t actually get into my first choice of university and was told “no chemistry course will take you with those grades”. No only did I get into a chemistry course but graduated with a first-class masters degree and am now close to completing my PhD in chemistry.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I really enjoy teaching. Thanks to my teachers I was inspired to keep pursuing chemistry and I now have that opportunity to inspire and help other learn chemistry to achieve their goals. It really feels like I am able to give back as I know what it’s like to not understand the topics.

  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

What makes me a Superprof is that I truly care. I want to see all my students do well and achieve their individual goals. I find it so rewarding to help someone finally understand something.
