About ME

I am a writer specialising in novels and short stories, with the occasional burst of poetry. I am also a fellow of the British Higher Education Academy. In my free time, I edit a small UK literary journal. I generally teach university level students or independent adult writers, but have recently been working with younger students, and quite enjoy it. I have taught fiction, poetry, and creative nonfiction seminars at the university level. I’m happy to focus on whatever elements you need to work on, or to teach the art of creative writing to you over time. I can also just review and discuss your writing, if you’d prefer. I can help you edit your work to prepare for a class assignment, or for submitting to a journal or agent to be considered for publication.

About the lesson

I spend time talking through elements of writing, giving examples and discussing them with the student(s). I will sometimes give a brief writing assignment using what I’ve taught, and then have the student read what they’ve written so we can discuss how they applied the lesson. I am also happy to have students send me typed writing assignments for more extensive comment and/or discussion. I am happy to work with groups and workshop each writer’s work. I believe in gentle honesty, where students will receive constructive criticism, delivered with kindness. Workshop participants are expected to follow the same approach.
