About Matthew

I am a composer, teacher, and editor of music with 15 years' experience teaching students from beginner to university level. I hold a PhD in Music and have a particular interest in helping students develop their musical understanding, confidence, and exam skills. My professional experience as a composer and editor informs my teaching, allowing me to support students in areas including analysis, composition, theory, and performance. My own compositions have been performed across Europe.

About the lesson

My lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, whether they are learning for enjoyment, exams, or personal development. I teach all levels, from beginners through to advanced students, with a focus on building strong technical foundations and musical understanding.

A key part of my teaching is developing effective practice technique. I work with students on how to practise efficiently and independently, so that progress continues between lessons and confidence builds over time.

Lessons are structured but flexible, adapting to each student’s interests and progress. They may include work on technique, sight-reading, theory, interpretation, and performance skills, depending on the student’s needs.

I regularly write and arrange pieces for students, helping them engage with music they enjoy while developing strong technical and musical skills.

After each lesson, I provide brief written feedback to support clear goals and focused practice between sessions.

Students are also invited to participate in informal concerts held twice a year, providing a supportive opportunity to perform and share their progress.

Details

My hourly rate includes lesson preparation and personalised tuition. Students are responsible for obtaining any required books, sheet music, or examination materials.

I operate a 24-hour cancellation policy. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged unless an alternative lesson can be arranged within the same week. I will always try to be as accommodating as possible.
