About Matthew
I am a composer, teacher, and editor of music with 15 years' experience teaching students from beginner to university level. I hold a PhD in Music and have a particular interest in helping students develop their musical understanding, confidence, and exam skills. My professional experience as a composer and editor informs my teaching, allowing me to support students in areas including analysis, composition, theory, and performance. My own compositions have been performed across Europe.

My lessons are tailored to each student's goals, level, and learning style. I focus on developing strong musical understanding, confidence, and the skills needed to approach assessments effectively. Lessons combine clear explanations with practical application, helping students understand not only the material they are studying, but also how to think about music independently. For exam students, I place particular emphasis on effective exam strategies, understanding assessment requirements, and developing the confidence needed to perform at their best. To support progress between sessions, I provide clear guidance and specific tasks to work on independently. I also provide formative feedback after each lesson, often through written notes, so students have a clear understanding of their progress and priorities for future work. My approach is structured, supportive, and adapted to each student's individual ambitions.

My hourly rate includes lesson preparation and personalised tuition. Any assessment, marking, or detailed feedback on compositions or written work is carried out during scheduled lesson time unless agreed separately in advance.
I operate a 24-hour cancellation policy. Lessons cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice will be charged unless an alternative lesson can be arranged within the same week. I will always try to be as accommodating as possible.
