About Susannah

I am a Biochemistry graduate from the University of St Andrews and hold a Master's degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Cambridge. Following my studies, I spent a year working as a Research Assistant investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying Batten disease, with a particular focus on protein expression and laboratory-based research. In October, I will be starting my PhD, where my research will focus on understanding the mechanisms behind late-onset retinal degeneration.

My academic and research experience has given me a strong foundation across a broad range of biological sciences, as well as a genuine appreciation for how the topics studied in the classroom connect to real scientific research. I have always been fascinated by understanding not just *what* happens in biology, but *why*.

During my time as a Research Assistant, I also had the opportunity to mentor a Master's student within the laboratory, helping them learn and confidently carry out a range of laboratory protocols. This experience reinforced how much I enjoy explaining scientific concepts and helping others develop their understanding and confidence.

I also found that understanding the “why” behind my own experiments was one of the most valuable parts of my research experience. Rather than simply knowing the steps of a technique, understanding the scientific principles behind methods such as BCA assays, protein expression and Western blotting made the concepts much easier to understand, remember and apply. This has strongly shaped how I approach learning and teaching: rather than asking students to memorise endless facts, I want to help them understand the underlying biology and see how different parts of the subject connect.

I am approachable, organised and patient, and I want my lessons to be a space where students feel comfortable asking questions and working through concepts they may not initially understand. Whether you are struggling with a particular topic, preparing for exams or simply looking to build your confidence in Biology, I will tailor my support to your individual goals.

About the lesson

Every lesson is personalised around your individual needs, goals and the topics you are currently studying.

Before we begin, we can identify the areas you would most like support with. This might be a particular topic you are struggling with, preparing for an upcoming exam, improving your exam technique, or working through gaps in your knowledge. I will then structure each lesson around what will be most useful to you.

Lessons can include:

• Clear, step-by-step explanations of difficult biological concepts

• Personalised diagrams, examples and slides to support your learning

• Working through exam-style questions and developing strategies for approaching unfamiliar questions

• Guidance on exam technique, including how to interpret questions and structure answers effectively

• Identifying gaps in your understanding and revisiting areas that need more practice

• Active questioning and discussion to check your understanding and build confidence

After lessons, I can provide personalised slides and practice questions based on the topics we have covered, giving you resources to use for revision and further practice.

Your first lesson is completely free. We can use this session to discuss your goals, identify the areas you would like support with and start working through a topic together. It also gives you the opportunity to see whether my teaching style is a good fit for you.

Lessons are typically one hour, although longer sessions can be arranged if you would prefer. I offer online tuition for GCSE and A-Level Biology and am also happy to provide academic mentoring and study support for undergraduate students studying Biology, Biochemistry or related subjects.
