About Shalom

I am currently a PhD student at the University of Toronto and graduated in 2023 with a Master's of Science in Kinesiology, and in 2021 with a Bachelor in Kinesiology and Minor in French from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. I have always been a high-achieving student, but have experienced my fair share of struggles throughout my academic career. I love writing, and have been awarded for my written proposals on numerous occasions, and want to be able to share my knowledge and help those who are looking to improve their own writing skills. I recognize that certain things come easier to some people more than others; I myself struggled with Math and Chemistry and felt a lot of shame and embarrassment when I did poorly. From my own tutoring experiences (both good and bad), I focus on a teaching philosophy that recognizes student's individual strengths, and always practice compassion and patience. We will celebrate your successes (no matter how small), work on building your confidence in areas you struggle, and help you achieve your academic goals.

About the lesson

I work with students individually to assess areas of strength and areas for growth and develop lessons and strategies to reach their specific goals. I believe every student can achieve their academic goals, and will work with them to build confidence in their skills and learn how to best approach problem areas.

I start with a consultation session, which will include assessing the student's current strengths, their areas of concerns, and discuss what they want to achieve. Concurrent sessions will vary but can include individualized worksheets/activities, help with specific assignments, working on implementing feedback from teachers, preparing for upcoming tests/evaluations, or developing learning and organizational strategies.

Lessons are for highschool students (including IB program students), Grade 12 students preparing university applications, and undergraduate students in any Science or Arts program.

Perfect! I booked a session with Shalom for essay writing, and it was awesome. She asked me to send my essay a day before our meeting, and she actually took time to read my work thoroughly. Shalom was very organized and logical with editing essays. My essay was highlighted in multiple colours for difference reasons - word choice, ambiguous idea, grammar mistake, and awkward usage. I like how she walked me through my essay and pointed out how I could improve with each problem, instead of just helping me edit and rewrite the whole essay. Because if that’s the case, I still won't be able to write a good essay myself. In her way, I can use the tricks and methods she taught me for my future essay writing. Before her class, I felt miserable about my terrible writing skill and thought that I would never be able to write a good essay throughout my life. After her class, I feel way more confident as I know there’s a way to improve it. Moreover, Shalom would also point out which part I did really well in my essay. That made me realize my work isn’t just a piece of crap and there are some good points in it. All I need to do is to work on the rest a bit, and it would turn out to be a good essay. I would highly recommend Shalom to anyone who has poor writing skill and wish to improve it.
