About Harry

I started playing the piano when I was seven. My grandad played all the time and I begged him to let me learn too. I went through a few teachers and wasn't in love with it at first, but once I was able to work on what I wanted to independently, the piano became my favourite way to spend my time.

At secondary school, there were occasional opportunities for me to play, whether in a show or for parents arriving at parents' evening. A couple of years ago, one of my teachers eventually asked if I could give her daughters lessons. I started teaching them both from scratch, and I quickly found out how much I enjoy teaching. A couple of years later they are both preparing to sit their Grade 3 exams.

I will be auditioning for conservatoires later this year as I aspire to be a concert pianist.

About the lesson

A typical exam-focused lesson starts with the non-piece aspects of the syllabus: scales, arpeggios, aural and sight reading. I like to identify what you're doing well, where you need to improve, and show you exactly how to improve before moving onto pieces, which always receive most of the lesson time.

We will then spend the rest of the lesson on whichever one or two pieces you feel need prioritising. You'll play through the entire piece before I give feedback, allowing me to understand what you're doing naturally before we work on specific areas. We'll then go through what you're doing well, what needs improvement, and exactly how to practise based on your individual needs.

I believe students learn best when they enjoy what they're playing, so lessons are broadly directed by the student. I avoid interrupting constantly while you play. Instead, I let you play the music as a whole before giving my feedback. My aim is to develop both your ability and your love of playing.
