About Síomha

My name is Síomha (pronounced Sheeva) and I am a Classics undergraduate at the University of St Andrews. I tutor Latin and Greek at Common Entrance, Scholarship, GCSE and IB level. I achieved 45/45 points in the IB and 11 Grade 9s at GCSE, so I know what it takes to succeed in these subjects.
I started learning Latin at 10 years old, picking up Ancient Greek at 13. At that age, it was the puzzle-solving aspect of Latin that appealed to me the most, but as I’ve grown older, I’ve come to love every part of Classics: the literature, the mythology, the history, the philosophy.

While I was studying for my own exams, I began to support peers with exam preparation, developing a love for teaching. I also volunteered teaching children in Latin at local primary schools and with this explored new techniques of communication and explanation.

I have built up a huge bank of resources over the years which I use to support and structure my lessons. Whether you or your child are a total beginner, someone with limited experience, or a more advanced learner, I aim to help every student reach their full potential.

About the lesson

I am a Latin and Ancient Greek tutor with recent first-hand experience in the exams I teach. This allows me to support students not only with content, but with the specific challenges and pressures they face.

As a university undergraduate, I am constantly surrounded by Latin and Ancient Greek and have experienced a multitude of varying approaches to teaching these subjects; I aim to combine the best bits of these together, tailoring the experience for every student’s needs.

Alongside my academic work, I have several years of teaching experience. I taught Latin weekly to primary school students, adapting lessons to different learning styles and helping build confidence from an early stage. I have also provided one-to-one and small group support to younger students in Latin and Greek, focusing on both language skills and exam technique.

My typical lesson length is one hour, which I believe is the perfect amount of time to cover substantial material while maintaining focus and engagement. My lessons are tailored to each student based on their level, but generally will include consolidation of previous work, targeted grammar practice, and exam-focused exercises.

I am currently tutoring at Common Entrance, Scholarship, GCSE and IB level; I aim to expand this to include A Level in the future.

My aim when teaching is to make the experience enjoyable while still maintaining rigour. I believe students achieve the best results when they are engaged, confident, and genuinely interested in what they are learning, and I work to ensure every student can see and celebrate their progress. My lessons are judgement-free, interactive and student-centred.
