About Toby

About Me

Hello! My name is Toby, and I am a Politics undergraduate at the University of Sussex, currently on track to achieve a First-Class degree. I am passionate about helping students reach their full academic potential by providing personalised, one-to-one support tailored to their individual learning style.

Having both dyslexia and ADHD myself, I understand that traditional classroom teaching does not work for everyone. I know first-hand how valuable individual support can be in building confidence and developing a genuine understanding of a subject. My aim is to provide an alternative to lecture-based learning by breaking down complex topics into manageable, easy-to-understand concepts that suit each student’s needs.

My teaching style is patient, encouraging, highly structured, and focused on exam success. While strong subject knowledge is important, I believe that understanding exactly what an exam question is asking is often the key to achieving the best possible grade. I work with each student using their exam board specification to strengthen subject knowledge, improve exam technique, develop essay-writing skills, and build confidence through targeted practice and constructive feedback.

Having recently completed my own GCSEs and A-levels, I understand the pressures students face and the demands of today’s exam specifications. I strive to create a relaxed, supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing confidence in their abilities.

Outside of university, I am a competitive cheerleader and will be representing my team at the Cheerleading World Championships in Florida. I also enjoy going to the gym, staying active, listening to pop music, watching films, and spending time with friends. Balancing sport with my studies has taught me discipline, resilience, and effective time management—qualities I bring to every tutoring session.

About the lesson

Each lesson is tailored to the individual student’s needs, focusing on topics or skills they find most challenging. Using the student’s specific exam board specification, lessons will strengthen subject knowledge, improve exam technique, develop essay-writing skills where appropriate, and build confidence through targeted practice, feedback, and regular progress reviews.
