About Daniel

I'm currently studying for a BA in PPE at the University of Oxford, and am working at a 1st level. I hope to use the same skills I use for my degree to make students' academic lives easier. Also, having managed to get into one of the most competitive degrees in the country, I hope I can help ambitious students to do the same. I would love to pass on the experience I have of the current admissions process for top universities to other aspiring students.
I am passionate about helping students who perhaps don't receive all the help they need in an ordinary classroom environment, and I aim to teach students the skills to function better in these environments, on top of teaching them the subject knowledge they need to pass their exams. I understand that many students may need extra help, but I also recognise that it is a fact of life that students will spend the majority of their learning time in a classroom, so I hope to help these students navigate these environments in a more beneficial way.
More generally, I believe that academic success comes from curiosity - one must be genuinely curious about what there is to discover within the subject one is studying. I am passionate about instilling this curiosity into students and I hope that students will come out of my lessons wanting to know more.

About the lesson

I begin by discussing with the student the areas of study they are struggling with. Once we have identified what to work on, I start lessons by briefly taking students through the material, outlining what they need to know. I then go through questions and problems which arise from the material with the students, encouraging them to reach answers with as little help as possible. This is the most important part of the lesson, as I believe students learn most effectively by doing. Finally, I ask students to summarise what they've learnt during the lesson - summarising and recall help students to remember what they've learnt once the lesson is over.
I also help students with reading and writing skills; for example, how to digest a complicated philosophical text, and the importance of writing plainly. I try to weave these skills into my lessons more subtly, however, if I find a student is particularly struggling, I am happy to dedicate whole lessons to teaching these skills.
I am happy to teach students at A level and below, and while my specialist knowledge is in history, politics and philosophy, I can teach humanities more broadly at lower levels.
