Hi, my name is Yonghyun. I am deeply enthusiastic about teaching, mentoring, and helping students unlock their full potential.
Having spent over a decade navigating the highest levels of academia—earning a B.A. in Math (Summa Cum Laude), a Ph.D. from Princeton, and completing postdoctoral training at Harvard—I know firsthand that mastering STEM is rarely just about raw intelligence. It is about having the right framework, the right mindset, and the right mentor.
My Teaching Method & Techniques
I teach STEM as inherently interdisciplinary subjects. Nature doesn't separate math, coding, and biology into different boxes, and neither do I. Drawing heavily from my direct teaching experience as a Princeton Teaching Assistant for courses like Organic Chemistry, Cell & Developmental Biology, and Integrated Quantitative Science, I teach students how to connect the dots. Instead of asking you to blindly memorize a formula or a biological pathway, I will teach you the mathematical or chemical "why" behind it. Once you understand the underlying mechanism, you never have to rely on rote memorization again.
What Sets Me Apart
Translating the Complex: In addition to mentoring scientists, I have collaborated with artists on projects at the intersection of art and science, and I frequently participate in scientific outreach. This experience has honed my ability to translate highly complex, intimidating scientific jargon into clear, visual, and intuitive concepts for non-specialist audiences.
Psychological Support: Through years of mentoring undergraduates, graduate students, and fellow postdocs, I’ve observed that academic struggles are often psychological. Imposter syndrome, burnout, and "math anxiety" are very real. I pride myself on being genuinely there for my students. I don't just teach the material; I actively help students overcome the psychological roadblocks that prevent them from succeeding.
A Typical Lesson Plan
Every student is different, but a standard 60-minute session typically looks like this:
The Check-In (10 mins): We discuss what you're currently struggling with, review any roadblocks from the past week, and assess your confidence level on the topic.
Deconstruction & Analogy (20 mins): I take the day's core concept (e.g., an Organic Chemistry mechanism, a Calculus theorem, or a Python function) and break it down. I frequently use analogies, visual mapping, and interdisciplinary examples to make the concept click.
Active Application (20 mins): You take the wheel. We work through problems or essay drafts together. I guide you with targeted questions rather than just giving you the answers, building your problem-solving muscles.
Synthesis (10 mins): We zoom back out. We summarize the core takeaways, connect them to the "big picture" of your class, and set clear goals for the next session.
Who These Lessons Are For
I tailor my lessons to ambitious students who want to truly understand their material, ranging from:
High School Students: AP Calculus, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, and College Admissions Essays.
Undergraduates: Pre-med requirements (Organic Chemistry, Biology), University Math, and introductory Python/Data Analysis.
Graduate Students: Data analysis troubleshooting, manuscript editing, and overcoming research/writing blocks.
Interdisciplinary Learners: Anyone looking to bridge the gap between biology, math, and coding.
