About Peter

I took the usual classical lessons in Canada and the UK, but then began self-teaching, ear playing and singing while doing my studies in Paris, and have been addicted to both ever since. I've been house pianist at a music hall, a musical theatre director, opened a Glastonbury stage, toured with an Afrobeat band, played for Sir Ian McKellen and shared a stage with Wu-tang Clan. I currently run a jazz trio and play piano bar around London. I run a regular night called the Jazz Jukebox, where I play crowd requests at the drop of a hat. As a teacher, I have given improvisation workshops at both Middlesex University and Trinity College of Music, and collaborated with members of the London Sinfonia and LSO.

About the lesson

I play pop, jazz, blues, soul, cabaret, and classical. I am that rare breed of musician who can teach both notation and by ear equally well, so whether you want to learn Mozart, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson, or Miles Davis (or even just make it to Grade 3), I'm your guy.

My method is tailored to your needs and I can meet you wherever you are. I teach all ages and abilities. The power of music is gigantic and my teaching is very engaged and energetic. My students --both children and adults-- soon find they are pushed along by a new sense of motivation. I have taught for fifteen years and I have dozens of five-star reviews from people who have re-discovered music and the art of learning with me. Music can really change lives.

My model in teaching would probably be someone like Jacob Collier. At my studio you'll find a resonator guitar, melodicas, an accordion, bass, drums, all sorts. I'll encourage us to listen carefully, break things down into simple ideas and engage with music in different and creative ways.

Above all, music lessons should be musical and about the passion of music. Despite playing with some very fine classical and jazz musicians, I am mostly self-taught, so I believe we can do whatever we set our sights on. Music is as much about opening up your heart and mind, reaching out with your feelings, as it is about dedication and hard work.

If you come for lessons here in my studio, I can record your music to a professional standard for free as we learn. I am fully DBS checked and certified.
