About Charlie
I’m a Scottish artist currently pursuing my MFA at the California Institute of the Arts, with a strong background in oil painting, installation, and arts education. Living with dyslexia has shaped the way I experience and communicate through art, I’m highly visual and intuitive, which has pushed me to develop hands-on, experimental approaches to both making and teaching art. Despite challenges with traditional text-based learning, I’ve embraced my strengths in observation and creativity, which have been central to my artistic journey. Throughout my career, I’ve exhibited widely across the UK and U.S., including solo shows at the Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh and The Watermill Gallery in Aberfeldy, where my work was featured in The Times. I was awarded the Aon Community Art Award in 2021 and initiated an artist residency program at Virgin Hotels Edinburgh, published in The Scotsman. Alongside my studio practice, I manage the fabrication workshop at CalArts and have taught at prestigious institutions such as Edinburgh Academy and The Glasgow School of Art. These experiences have helped me build a unique, hands-on teaching style that I’m passionate to share with students of all levels and backgrounds.

I’m a Scottish artist who teaches oil painting and creative drawing to people of all ages interested in exploring art and learning about its history and culture, especially across the UK, Europe, and the United States. My lessons are hands-on and flexible, covering oil painting, charcoal drawing with linseed oil, and traditional techniques like making egg tempera. I also guide students in creating their own oil paints from organic pigment powders, emphasizing a deeper connection with materials. I offer portfolio preparation for those applying to art programs or universities in the U.S. and internationally. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to develop your skills further, my goal is to build your confidence and deepen your appreciation of art.
