About Hilmi
I am a professional practicing artist and educator with over 20 years of teaching experience. I studied Fine Art and Art History & Theory in London before completing my postgraduate training in Painting at the Royal Academy of Arts.
Alongside my own studio practice and exhibitions, I have spent many years teaching drawing and painting to adults of all levels. In Melbourne, I founded and run Seven Easels, where I have developed specialized painting workshops, courses, open studio sessions and individual mentorships. I have also taught at Box Hill Community Arts Centre for more than a decade.
Teaching has always been an important part of my practice as an artist. I enjoy helping students understand not only how to draw and paint, but how to look, think and make decisions as artists.
I believe every student has their own visual language. My role is to provide the technical knowledge, guidance and critical support that allows them to discover and develop it with confidence.

My lessons are tailored to each student’s individual level, interests and artistic goals. I teach drawing and painting through a strong foundation in observation, composition, colour, materials and technique, while encouraging students to develop their own visual language and confidence.
Whether you are a complete beginner, returning to art after many years, or an experienced artist wanting to develop your practice further, I provide structured, supportive and individually focused tuition.
My teaching includes drawing, oil painting, life drawing, traditional and contemporary painting techniques, colour mixing, glazing, composition and developing work from initial studies through to finished paintings. Lessons are practical and hands-on, with demonstrations and guidance adapted to the needs of each student.
Most importantly, I don’t teach students to simply copy a particular style. My aim is to give you the technical knowledge, confidence and critical understanding to develop a way of working that is genuinely your own.
