Personalized Classical Guitar Lessons — San Diego & Online
I’m a classical guitarist and university-level instructor with over a decade of teaching experience. Whether you're picked up the guitar yesterday or have been playing for years, my goal is simple: to make you a confident, independent player who knows exactly how to practice and improve.
How I Teach
No two students learn the same way. I customize our curriculum around your specific tastes and personal schedule, combining solid technique with music you actually enjoy playing.
Beginners: We start with proper posture, clear sound production, and simple pieces right away—no endless, dry exercises before you get to play actual music.
Intermediate to Advanced: We dive into tone control, dynamic phrasing, and sight-reading. I also work with students on fingerstyle, non-standard repertoire, classical guitar history, and original composition/arranging.
Smart Practice Habits: Real progress happens between lessons. I teach you how to analyze your own playing and practice efficiently on your own time.
What a Typical Lesson Looks Like
First 5–10 Mins: Focused warm-up targeting hand relaxation, control, and clean tone.
Main Section (30–40 Mins): Working through your repertoire section by section—fixing technical bottlenecks and polishing musicality.
Wrap-Up & Theory (10 Mins): Connecting theory to the fretboard, answering questions, and setting clear, manageable practice goals for the week.

Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the teacher
Mr. Liu is very attentive in his teaching and is always willing to work with the pieces I want to learn. Whenever he suggests a way to interpret a piece or asks me to play something in a certain way, he always explains the reasoning behind it. As someone with a background in engineering, I really appreciate this approach. I highly recommend him!
Dr. Liu is a dedicated and thoughtful teacher who takes the time to understand each student and their individual needs. He is committed to helping his students work through challenges, develop good habits of independent thinking, and deepen their ability to experience and appreciate music. He genuinely enjoys seeing his students grow as musicians, and that enthusiasm comes through in his teaching. I highly recommend him as a guitar teacher and would be happy to work with him as a colleague.
