About Joana
I'm a figurative sculptor and visual artist specializing in portrait busts and the human form. I studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon and hold an M.A. in Art and Environment from Ireland.
I have honed my skills through figurative sculpture classes at the New Masters Academy (NMA), learning directly from teachers connected to the Florence Academy of Art and applying the Drawing in Space constructive method, a systematic approach to understanding structure and sculpting the figure with confidence.

I offer portrait and bust sculpture classes for all levels, from complete beginners to more advanced students.
The goal of these classes is to learn how to create a portrait bust in clay. We begin by building a solid internal armature, then progressively build up the form using the Drawing in Space constructive approach, studying the proportions of the head and face, the planes of the skull, and the anatomy of the neck and shoulders.
Throughout the process you will learn:
- How to construct a portrait bust from the general to the specific.
- Anatomical landmarks of the head, face, neck and shoulders
- How to read and translate a 3D reference into sculpture
- Surface quality and the language of form in the classical tradition
- How to apply the Drawing in Space method to simplify complexity and build structure with confidence
Materials: clay or professional plasticine.
