About Tom
I grew up wanting only to become a writer of fiction. I read constantly and enjoyed writing stories. In high school I won prizes for my writing and published for the first time when I was in 10th grade. At Princeton, I majored in English and creative writing, studying under some of the era's great novelists. But my senior thesis project -- focused on native American prose -- changed my goals by furthering my love of wilderness and camping. I decided I wanted to write things that would serve the growing environmental protection movement, especially concerning the importance of wilderness preservation. So, I moved to Montana for grad school, where I earned a Master's degree in natural resource conservation with a focus on communications processes involved in decision-making about wildland and wildlife management. Ever since then I've lived an exciting life that has revolved entirely around communications both written and spoken, most of it in the arena of politics and much of it connected to environmental issues. I've been a press secretary traveling with Presidential candidates; a national and international publicist; and a strategist for successful campaigns and lobbying efforts. Along the way I've also done freelance writing and have published in numerous outlets, from The Journal of Soil & Water Conservation to Playboy magazine. In the last couple years I've edited two books, most recently an anthology of poetry and essays by women and trans writers. I hope students I work with will find my love of writing infectious.

I always start by getting to know a student's interests, needs and goals -- and assessing his or her current skills and experience with writing. What comes next depends on the student's circumstances -- all my teaching is customized to help the student improve through steady practice and feedback. Among the key "secrets" to becoming a good writer is not only practice, along with editing and rewriting, but also reading -- reading good writing that speaks to your interests and helps build your enthusiasm for the goal being a good writer. I personally love reading and writing, and I hope to help students feel the same.
