About Judy
I have spent over ten years helping people connect with the violin in a warm and deeply rewarding way. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music Theory with a violin specialization, which helps me explain how music works in simple terms. My true passion lies in working with adult beginners and returning learners who want to explore non-classical genres like jazz, blues, and folk.
We focus on using simple exercises, relaxed ergonomic positioning, and musical mindfulness to ensure you never feel physical strain or mental stress. Whether you want to play easy classical tunes, traditional folk songs, or inspiring worship music, we will tailor the lessons to your tastes. For example, I recently taught an adult beginner who was convinced their fingers were too stiff to play blues slides.
We adjusted their shoulder rest position and practiced slow, relaxed breathing exercises while shifting up the neck. In just a few weeks, they were playing smooth, expressive blues runs with total physical ease and a huge smile on their face. My teaching methodology focuses heavily on fostering creative freedom and spontaneous musical expression on the violin. We will explore exciting subjects like improvisation in non-classical styles including jazz, folk, and world music. You will learn how to create your own beautiful melodies over chord changes and develop a truly unique improvisational voice.
This creative approach is perfect for church vocalists who want to play moving solos or stage performers looking to add dramatic flair to their shows. I remember working with a church singer who was terrified of playing without sheet music during services. We practiced simple pentatonic patterns over basic chord tracks, and soon they were creating soulful, improvised melodies completely on the spot.
I am dedicated to pushing my students to trust their own musical intuition and supporting them in excelling on their instrument. We will break down complex musical scales into simple, friendly patterns that make sense on the fingerboard. This helps you transition from overthinking the rules to feeling the music naturally.
We will work together step by step to unlock your inner jazz or folk fiddler. No matter your current skill level, my goal is to give you the confidence to play freely. Your violin should feel like a natural extension of your creative voice.
