About Alex
My stories and essays have appeared in the New York Times, The Believer, The American Scholar, Ploughshares, the North American Review and the Forward, to name a few. Other pieces have been included in distinguished collections, notably More New York Stories: The Best of the New York Times City Section and Best American Short Stories. The latter contribution was singled out by the The Wall St. Journal as “the best of The Best.” My first book, The Musical Illusionist and Other Tales (Akashic Books), was praised by Library Journal as “a potential cult classic” and the Village Voice as “uncanny.”
As an editor, I’ve worked across a variety of media, from advertising agencies and production companies to book publishers and academic institutions. For several years I ran an independent literary press and its corresponding web-quarterly, Hotel St. George Press, described by Poets & Writers Magazine as “brilliantly conceived” and by Wordsmith Books as “by far, the most unique, creative and rewarding web design of any online literary press in existence at this moment.”
Additionally, I have led seminars and workshops at many institutions, including Harvard University, the School of Visual Arts, the Pratt Institute and the Rhode Island School of Design.

I offer a highly personalized approach based on the unique needs and goals of each student. I am available as a private tutor as well as a classroom instructor. Each lesson will include a range of activities, from spontaneous 'free-writes' to literary analyses to general instruction in the mechanics of grammar and punctuation.
