About Tom

I am a keen and accomplished linguist with a confirmed place to read French & Spanish at Oxford University in October 2020.

I have spent several weeks in different parts of France, in the company of native speakers, perfecting all areas of my understanding of French language and popular culture.

Until March 2020, I was working as a Language Assistant at a private secondary school in Zambia, where I taught oral and vocabulary lessons (on my own) to mixed ability pupils aged 11-16. I also assisted in teaching grammar and classwork in preparation for iGCSEs. Additionally, I have worked as a volunteer Languages assistant for the Slade Primary School, Tonbridge where I introduced younger children (aged 6-11) to elementary French, making their lessons fun and interactive by using games and other methods to help them begin learning a new language.

During both of these language-teaching experiences, I received really positive feedback, from the teachers/parents at the schools and notably, from the students themselves. (References available upon request).

I consider that my enthusiasm for languages, my practical teaching experience and my academic credentials set me apart: I can offer a fresh, engaging and effective approach to learning a language that could be difficult to find elsewhere.

About the lesson

With an excellent academic record and recent experience of teaching Oral classes to students in the UK and overseas, I believe I would be the ideal person to maintain and develop your spoken French.

My methodology is based on active engagement: I would get to know you, your interests and your linguistic ability in French in order to devise relevant conversation topics and vocabulary lists to suit you. I will make our conversations fun and diverse whilst offering key advice on how to improve your spoken French and gain confidence. I can also provide tuition to underpin and consolidate your GCSE and A level grammar knowledge for future exams should this be required.

If you want someone young and exciting to help you with your language studies at school, as well as recent experience of passing those exams successfully, I’m your man!

£15 per half hour (I believe 30 minutes is the most beneficial length of lesson for GCSE standard language conversation. Having 2-3 sessions per week would be ideal as I am a firm believer that a ‘little and often’ approach is the most effective way to improve your spoken language skills.)

£30 per hour for combined conversation & grammar.
