About Richard

I am the author of Sir Charles Wogan: Jacobite, Soldier, Royal Agent & Man of Letters, published in 2025. Its publication was the result of ten years of research that took me to archives and libraries in Dublin, London, Paris, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona and Simancas (Spain). In 2019 I organized, with the help of the Polish and French Embassies to Dublin, the commemorative seminar of the rescue and escape of the Polish Princess Maria Clementina Sobieska by Sir Charles Wogan and his rescue party. In 2021 its follow-on publication received excellent reviews and established it as a significant contribution to scholarship of the eighteenth century. A full list of publications and conference contributions can be found on my official website: (concealed information)

About the lesson

Jacobite Historian & Author | Wild Geese Research & 18th-Century Manuscripts

Unlock Your Ancestors’ Secrets with a Published Expert.

Have you considered all possible sources of Irish genealogy? Do you need help deciphering 18th-century Irish, Latin, Spanish or French manuscripts? I am Richard K. Maher, published author of Sir Charles Wogan: Jacobite, Soldier, Royal Agent & Man of Letters (Pen & Sword, 2025).

Currently on research sabbatical in Vannes, Brittany, I spend my days in the archives tracing the footsteps of the Wild Geese—the Irish exiles who served across Europe. I offer specialized one-to-one research support for researchers and genealogists.

I can help you:

Translate & Analyze: Decode difficult handwriting in military records, parish registers, and private correspondence from the Jacobite era.
Contextualize: Understand the political and military landscape of the Irish Brigades in France, Spain, and Italy.
Strategize: Identify exactly which European archives (Vannes, Simancas, Rome) hold the keys to your family history.
Deep Dive: I offer bespoke archival scouting services for serious researchers.
Don’t waste hours guessing. Get expert guidance from a historian who has handled original documents at Kew, the Vatican, and Simancas.

Rate: €40/hr for Consultation | €100/hr for Specialized Archival Research & Manuscript Analysis. First 15-minute discovery call free.

Richard is an excellent teacher. His passion for Irish culture and language is contagious. He is really patient and reassuring when I’m struggling, and then celebrates every little win with such enthusiasm. He is encouraging, fun, and engaging. He actually makes it enjoyable to sit down and use my brain after a full day at work. I can only recommend working with him!
