About Carson

My Bachelor's and Master's degree included both language learning and language teaching classes which go beyond what was covered by TEFL certification. I also used some Spanish in my Master's thesis, and while it wasn't the main topic, speaking and understanding the history of Spanish played an important role in the final conclusion. In addition to more general linguistics, I personally enjoy phonetics and phonology which is very important for sounding more like a native speaker.

Living in Colombia and speaking Spanish every day has given me a fluency and confidence to live entirely in Spanish, and traveling from there has allowed me to hear and learn about many different dialects of Spanish and different ways that Spanish is used.
Although I grew up with English, Spanish has always been a part of my life as a Puerto Rican, and I have spoken Spanish for the majority of my life. Since I went through the learning process as well, I understand the common struggles and challenges that English speakers have when learning Spanish, which is especially helpful for people who are not yet fluent enough to have a conversation.

For about two years now, since finishing my Master's Degree, I've been teaching English and Spanish both online and in person, to people from many different countries and languages, from children to adults, and this experience has allowed me to constantly learn, adapt, and improve my methods to meet a student's needs.

About the lesson

As a linguist I like to teach language descriptive language, the language that reflects the way native speakers actually speak, which is different from most classes and teachers which use a prescriptive textbook form of language that isn't actually how native speakers communicate. For example, schools almost always teach that "de nada" is Spanish for "you're welcome," which is true, but while living in Colombia nobody ever said that, instead they say "con gusto," which was never taught in my school classes, along with the kind of unexpected writing you'll come across on social media and texting with native speakers.

If you don't have preexisting materials I can lead the lesson with the topics that are relevant to your Spanish goals. For example if you're learning for tourism or friends and family, we can practice the casual speech you'd hear from native speakers; if it's for work we can look at more formal setting speech; and if it's for a foreign education we can study the kinds of academic language you'll need.
If you're taking classes at school, work, or with an app and have materials you've already been working on, I can help you understand you found difficult and explain how it works.
My lessons are best for people who are beginner-intermediate levels, and want to gain fluency in a practical way for real world uses, whether that's middle school classes or adults preparing to live or work in a Spanish speaking environment.
