About Adelaide

Hello! I am a French tutor with over 4 years of experience and more than 200 students taught. My own relationship with French began in school and has continued throughout my adult life through extensive time spent in France and Francophone Africa, giving me both the deep grammatical knowledge of an academic and the communicative fluency and cultural understanding of someone who has lived the language. I bring both to my teaching. I teach French at all levels from complete beginner through to A-Level and university preparation. I am experienced with GCSE and A-Level French across all major UK exam boards and prepare students for all components of these qualifications. I also teach French for professional purposes, for travel, and for students who simply want to develop their French for personal enjoyment. My students consistently tell me that working with me changes their relationship with French — that they start finding it genuinely interesting rather than merely obligatory, and that their confidence in both speaking and writing grows significantly over the course of our sessions. Building that confidence and that genuine engagement with the language is what I aim for with every student I work with.

About the lesson

French teaching that produces real results requires developing all four skills — listening, reading, writing, and speaking — in genuine depth, not just to the level of exam adequacy. Most students who struggle in French have been taught the grammar without being given enough communicative practice; as a result, their grammatical knowledge is not deeply enough embedded to be available under the time pressure of an exam or a real conversation. I address this by ensuring that every grammatical structure we study is immediately practiced in communicative contexts, so that the learning becomes active and accessible rather than passive and retrievable only under ideal conditions. For exam students, I cover the entire specification for the relevant qualification with detailed, systematic thoroughness. I know the GCSE and A-Level French specifications of all major UK exam boards extremely well, and I design my teaching and practice exercises around the specific demands of each. I prepare students for all examination components including the writing paper, which requires both grammatical accuracy and the ability to construct extended arguments in French, and the speaking examination, which requires spontaneity, fluency, and the confidence to handle unexpected questions. I also teach French for non-examination purposes: conversational French for adults, business French, travel preparation, and French for students who want to develop their language beyond what their academic course requires. For each of these contexts, I design a curriculum that is genuinely focused on the specific communicative needs and goals of the individual student.
