About Katya
I have ten years of English teaching experience, both in secondary school and higher education. I hold a BA in English from Oxford, a Masters from Edinburgh University in Art History and a PhD in Creative Writing from Aberystwyth University. I am also a fully qualified teacher, following the completion of my PGCE in 2020. I live and work in Wales, where I am currently on maternity leave. I have a passion for teaching and meeting new people. Nothing compares to the satisfaction of seeing my students grow in confidence and skill, and discovering why I love my subject!

As a tutor, I adopt a friendly, professional approach to teaching. An initial assessment and conversation will help to determine your strengths and weaknesses, and areas of focus that you would like to work on. Having established your priorities as a learner, I will set tasks for completion both during the tutorial and after it. Typically, tutoring sessions will involve both correcting homework tasks and the introduction and completion of new material. I am a believer in 'learning through doing' and will design tasks that help you develop your area of focus, as well as practising and embedding new skills in reading, writing and literary analysis. Since all students' needs are different, I adopt a flexible and dynamic approach to suit different learning styles and personal circumstances. I have experience teaching KS3-5 from my work as a secondary school teacher and am happy to take on pupils who need support for GCSE and A-level exams, as well as pupils who need general help and support with their reading/writing. I am also happy to coach university students who need help with their essay writing or literacy skills. I have experience as an academic mentor at university as well as a teacher/lecturer. Typically lessons are an hour or two in length, depending on your requirements and the regularity of the sessions.
