About Steven
Hi, I’m Steven! I’m a qualified German teacher with QTS and a PGCE in Secondary German from Durham University, where I also completed my undergraduate degree in Modern Languages and Cultures.
My interest in German began as a student myself, and I understand that learning a language can sometimes feel challenging. I actually self-studied German at A-Level after formal teaching was no longer available to me, which taught me the value of clear explanations, consistent practice and having the right support. That experience is one of the reasons I enjoy helping students become more confident in their own German.
During my degree, I spent seven months living and working in Germany as a teaching assistant at a Gymnasium near Hanover. Alongside developing my German and experiencing everyday life in Germany, this confirmed how much I enjoyed teaching and ultimately led me to train as a secondary German teacher.
I have since taught students across KS3 and GCSE, working with a wide range of abilities and adapting my teaching to suit individual needs. I particularly enjoy helping students who lack confidence or feel that German simply “isn’t their subject”. My aim is to create a friendly, supportive environment where students feel comfortable making mistakes, asking questions and seeing their progress.

Hi, I’m Steven! I’m a qualified teacher with QTS, a PGCE in Secondary German and a degree in Modern Languages and Cultures from Durham University.
My lessons are tailored to each student’s individual needs, whether you want to build confidence in German, improve your grades or prepare for upcoming GCSE or A-Level examinations. I aim to make German feel manageable by breaking down difficult grammar and vocabulary into clear, structured steps before giving students plenty of opportunities to apply what they have learnt.
My teaching combines vocabulary building, grammar, translation, reading, listening, speaking and writing, depending on the student’s goals. I use techniques developed through my teacher training, including modelling, scaffolding, retrieval practice and regular questioning to identify misconceptions and check understanding. For exam students, I also incorporate targeted practice using exam-style questions and focus on the specific skills needed to improve performance.
I have experience teaching German across KS3 and KS4 in secondary schools, including adapting lessons for students with different abilities and additional learning needs. I have also taught in Germany, where I spent seven months working in a German Grammar school. This experience gave me a strong understanding of both the German language and German culture.
Lessons will typically last one hour, although this can be adapted where appropriate. I welcome students from KS3 through to GCSE and A-Level, whether they are struggling with German, aiming for a particular grade or simply want to become more confident using the language.
