About Stuart
I am a professional Graphic Designer, Crafts-person and Teacher with my own creative practice. I studied Printmaking & Photomedia at Central St. Martin's; a Master's level PGCE, at the University of Leeds, gaining Qualified Teachers Status (QTLS) a year later and a Master's in Design at Northumbria University. I have taught for 20 years at both Leeds Arts University and in York, at Undergraduate and Levels 3 & 4 (UAL Foundation and UAL Extended Diploma.)
I have been a Pathway Leader, specialising in Communication Design which means Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation and Comics. I am also a specialist Contextual Studies Lecturer. This means the study of Art History, Ideas, Theories and Movements which accompany studio based programmes. For instance, I covered subjects such as The Bauhaus, Swiss Style, Post-Colonialism, Feminist Art, Semiotics and Film Studies.
My ethos is to inspire deep learning through individualised tuition.

My approach to Art & Design learning centres around individual creativity. We all approach design problems and fine art enquiry differently, from a personal perspective, arrived at as much from our life experiences as from our own art & design aspirations.
I champion 1 to 1 teaching and learning from level 3 (UK age 17/18, Extended Diploma, 'A' Level etc.) up to Level 6 (3rd year of Degree, any age group) including Contextual Study for each level.
The minimum length of session is 1 hour. Sessions can focus on drawing approaches, problem solving, ideation techniques, critical thinking and use of sketch/note-books to document thoughts and processes. I can also provide tuition in to printing techniques, typography, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, through making simple publications to explore layout and composition, branding and logo design.
I have taught students from age 17/18 upwards to mature students and my ethos of 1 to 1, highly individualised learning has remained a constant.
I have an MA in Design, a Masters Teaching Qualification and a Degree from Central St. Martin's School of Art & Design, London. Whatever aspect of Graphic Design, Printing, Illustration or Contextual Study you want to explore, I can design a bespoke programme for you from as little as a 1 hour 'refresher' to a multi-week course.

Stu is an incredible tutor he helped me throughout two years of education, always ensuring i felt supported through my studies with him. He’s incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and friendly; not only is Stu a wonderful tutor he is also exceptionally experienced within his studies and practice, no question will ever be left unanswered!! There are simply no words i could use to fully express how truly phenomenal he is!!
Stuart Harvey taught me during the BA(Hons) in Graphic Design I am studying towards at York College. He is calm, reassuring and full of positive encouragement and determined to get the best out of his students and wants his students to enjoy their studies. We worked together on academic writing a discipline I find very tricky. He has a vast knowledge of graphic design history and culture. I can thoroughly recommend him as a tutor.
I first worked with Stuart when he was my Level 5 tutor for Contextual Influences as part of my BA in Graphic Design and Communication. I found him incredibly approachable and easy to communicate with. His extensive knowledge, combined with his thoughtful suggestions and recommendations of avenues to explore, encouraged me to delve much deeper into the subject than I might have done independently. As this was my first major academic essay, achieving a First was a fantastic result, and Stuart’s guidance played a valuable part in that success.
Although Stuart has since left the educational institution where I study, I am now in my final year, with my dissertation looming, and I have sought out his help once again for private tuition. That speaks volumes about the confidence I have in his ability to support me academically.
One of the things I particularly value is his flexibility. We can meet in different locations, with Leeds Library being our most recent meeting place, or communicate via email and Microsoft Teams when more convenient.
What I value most about Stuart is his ability to guide me through complex ideas in a calm, structured way, while encouraging me to think more critically and explore perspectives I may not have considered. I feel supported in developing my own ideas rather than simply being given the answers, which has been invaluable to my academic progress. I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking thoughtful and effective academic tuition.Stu has been a colleague and friend for ten years. I needed help with editing photos using Photoshop, and advice about keeping a digital archive of images. Stu has a vast amount of expertise in using this type of software and is an excellent graphic designer. He took the time to understand what I needed and pitch the tutorial carefully to my level. Before the end of the session he ensured that I was able to replicate the process he taught me. He took an overall interest in my current project and offered some valuable design advice over and above the remit of the tutorial. He is patient, knowledgeable and insightful and I would recommend him to anyone looking for practical artistic advice, suggestions, discussion and feedback, as well as for specific, design-based problem solving.
