About Mayte

Hola! I’m Mayte

If your child is studying Spanish at a British or international school and you’re looking for a teacher who understands both how to teach GCSE / IGCSE / DELE / SIELE Spanish and how Spanish exams are assessed, you’ve come to the right place!

I’m a native Spanish teacher from Spain, a UK-qualified teacher (PGCE & QTS) and an experienced examiner for DELE, SIELE and AQA.

I’ve been teaching Spanish since 2017 in Cambridge (UK), including in British secondary schools, online education and international settings. I specialize in GCSE, IGCSE, DELE, A-Level and IB Spanish, with a particular focus on helping students become more confident, independent and effective communicators.

As an examiner, I know that success is not simply about knowing lots of Spanish. Students need to understand what a question is asking, how to develop their answers, how to communicate ideas clearly and how to use their language effectively.

But I also want Spanish to feel like a real language, not just a list of grammar rules to memorize!

️ A little bit about me

I started working in education in Cambridge in 2017 and later completed my PGCE and QTS in Modern Languages.
Since then, I’ve taught Spanish from KS3 to A-Level, worked as a Spanish Courses Director, taught GCSE students online and worked with learners from a wide range of backgrounds and ages.

I genuinely love teaching online. For me, one of the best parts of teaching is seeing a student go from “I don’t know how to say this…” to suddenly using Spanish confidently without overthinking every word.

And because English is also a second language for me, I understand what it feels like to learn another language, make mistakes and sometimes feel nervous about speaking.

So yes, we’ll work hard!
But we’ll also laugh, make mistakes, celebrate progress and enjoy the process. ️

Learning Spanish should open doors
Spanish is much more than an exam subject. It is a language spoken across different countries, cultures and communities, and I love bringing that authentic Spanish-speaking world into my lessons.

Whether you’re preparing for an important GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level, IB, DELE or SIELE exam, or simply want to become more confident using Spanish, I’d love to help.

About the lesson

What are my lessons like?

For me, online teaching is not about putting a traditional classroom lesson onto a screen.

I design my lessons specifically for online learning, making sure students are actively involved from the very beginning.
You won’t spend an hour just watching me talk! You’ll be thinking, speaking, practicing, answering questions, solving problems and using Spanish throughout the lesson.

I structure lessons around a clear learning journey based on evidence research Rosenshine Principles adapted to online setting:

Retrieve → Model → Practice together → Practice independently → Apply

For example, we might begin with a quick interactive quiz to retrieve previous learning, use images or infographics to introduce new language, practice together through interactive activities, and then move towards an independent exam-style task.
As students become more confident, I gradually remove the support.

The goal is always:
“I can do this on my own.”

Online learning, designed properly

I use digital tools because they can make online learning more interactive and give me a much clearer picture of what a student actually understands.

Depending on the lesson, we might use:
Quizlet, Kahoot, Wordwall & LearningApps
️ Images, infographics & visual prompts
Polls, chat & digital whiteboards
Breakout rooms for speaking practice
Interactive listening activities
️ Shared documents for writing and feedback
But I never use technology just because it looks fun!

Every activity has a purpose, whether that is retrieval, modeling, guided practice, checking understanding or independent language production.

How do I know if you’re learning?

Assessment doesn’t only happen at the end of a topic or before an exam.

I’m constantly checking understanding through questioning, quizzes, speaking activities and short independent tasks.

Sometimes we might finish with a quick exit ticket or one-minute challenge to see what you can produce without looking at your notes.

That helps me decide what we need to work on next.
So rather than: Teach → homework → next lesson

I prefer: Where are you now? → Where do you need to go? → What will get you there?

Exam preparation with an examiner’s perspective
Having worked as an examiner, I can help students understand what assessment is really looking for.

We can work on:
Developing answers rather than giving short responses
Improving accuracy and range of language
Tackling reading and listening independently
Building confidence in speaking
Developing writing and extended responses
Understanding different question types
Recognizing common mistakes
Approaching exam tasks strategically

But I don’t want students to simply memorize a formula.
I want them to understand why something works and develop the confidence to use Spanish independently.
