About Luke

Hi! I'm Luke. I'm a Melbourne-based musician with a Bachelor of Education and 15 years of experience teaching privately. I hold a current Working With Children Check. My teaching style focuses on encouragement and forward movement, as well as explicitly discussing non-musical skill development like personal responsibility (for practicing during the week), perseverance (especially with hard songs) and other skills that learning an instrument brings.

Beyond piano, I also play guitar, bass, drums, flute, and (most recently) hurdy-gurdy, which keeps my own musical curiosity active and feeds back into how I teach. I work with complete beginners through to intermediate students, and enjoy adapting my approach to whatever a student is motivated by - whether that's exam preparation, songwriting, or simply playing songs they love.

As well as being a bit of a musical Swiss army knife, I'm generally quite creative. I love photography and taking on small video recording projects for fun.

About the lesson

->Who this is for
Children, teens, and adults - complete beginners through to intermediate level. Usually ages 7+ but I can start earlier for families keen for their kids to be exposed to music from a young age.

->My approach:
I believe lessons should feel like music-making from day one, not just preparation for it. I want to pass on my love of music. Enjoyment cultivates skill development! Students play real songs early, not just scales and exercises, because that's what keeps motivation alive and gives technique a purpose. Technical work still happens every lesson, just as a warm-up rather than the main event.

I can work from whatever resource you already have, or recommend one suited to your age and skill level. Lessons are built around what you want to get out of them. As you progress, we'll quickly move into reading sheet music confidently and, if you are interested, we can move towards playing from chords or writing your own music.

->Lesson length and format
Default 30 minute lesson (negotiable), in person at my home (South-East Melbourne suburbs) or online. I can travel to your home for an additional fee.

->Experience
Bachelor of Education, 15 years of private piano teaching experience, and over 30 years playing the instrument myself - as well as other instruments, like guitar, bass, drums, flute, vocals, even (recently) a hurdy-gurdy! I can teach students through to AMEB Grade 6, though exams are entirely optional.
